Getting Your Disaster Survival Kit Right The First Time

By April Briggs

When a disaster occurs, you need to be ready. You need to be ready to leave any place that is dangerous for some other place that you can, hopefully, survive. You need to be ready to ensure your family is safe. You need to be ready to handle this kind of situation and time is of the essence, so you need to think about this now. You need a disaster survival kit, often called a bug out bag, sitting where you can find and grab it quickly.

You will read things that will tell you to have at least three days worth of supplies to survive during those first critical days after a problem. That includes water and food, of course. Other things that must be taken will help you see the necessity of being prepared for just such an event.

You probably do not need a shower for a few days. A bath might be found if there is a river close by. But a gallon a day, for each person, of drinkable water is critical. Each person should carry their own water and this can be in any container that can be closed or sealed against contamination.

The use of purification pills for water is something to be explored. These are readily available from many sources, both off line and on. You will place the appropriate number of pills in the bottle and fill with water from a running water source. The container is closed and shaken and then it will need to sit for a while. Bleach is something that can be packed and it will also help with sanitizing water for use.

The food you need should last at least three days. In any disaster scenario, grocery stores are quickly emptied out. If you are not on the scene, quickly enough, you may come up empty. You do not want to carry a lot of cans as they can get very heavy, very quickly. Dried snacks, while not as satisfying as a sandwich, can be carried easily.

Dehydrated foods are more and more popular every year. They are light weight and designed to be packed and eaten while on the go. Many people use these for camping trips and your evacuation from your home, as far as living arraignments, are the same as camping for all practical purposes.

You will need a tent or tarp to drape over something for protection from rain and other weather conditions. Most people succumb to the elements when they are constantly on the move like you may have to be. A bed roll or sleeping bag for each member of your party is crucial. You might be on that run for quite some time and you will need the rest that a warm bed provides.

Do not forget to bring along any medications you or any member of your party needs on a day to day basis. A can opener, in case you find things you can use, will be a good thing to have. A good knife, a first aid kit and a hand crank radio will be helpful and should be part of this critical bug out kit.
