Create New Looks With Vintage Textile

By Patricia Williams

When it comes to fashion and home design, trends can change frequently but there is a way to create a style that reflects a personal identity. Instead of trying to keep up with what others are doing, it may help to choose a decor style that cannot be easily duplicated. Using a vintage textile can change the way an outfit or decorated space looks and feels.

Many consider patterns from yesteryear to be classics that never go out of style and have a multitude of uses. For instance, small hounds tooth patterns are great for jackets or suits for either gender. Only because it may not be found at a store, it does not mean it would be inappropriate for work.

Sometimes small pinstripes may not be part of the current fashion but they can still be worn in any business environment. However the same cannot be said for textiles that are multicolored or have complex designs. Some patterns from the sixties were a blend of paisleys or psychedelic colors that were better as casual wear or inside the home of a younger person. Yet, there is no reason as to why they cannot be repurposed into fashions of today.

Anyone with an imagination should find mutliple ways to incorporate these retro fabrics without looking like a complete throwback. One way to use fabric with trendy prints and colors is to try them out as accents instead of the main attraction. Some of ideas to be considered are making pockets, using as trim or coordinated with a complementary pattern that is neutral.

People who know their way around a sewing machine will find a world of possibilities. Retro textile can be used with current patterns for an everyday piece of clothing like a long sleeved shirt with buttons or simple skirt. By picking up certain colors in a design pattern, anyone can combine complementary pieces that look like a professional wardrobe consultant put it together.

As for the home, sometimes all it takes is a pair of scissors and some imagination. Retro fabrics can be used to make curtains, pillow cases and functional pieces of art. If a sewing machine is not available, some items may be sewn by hand and secured with a few drops of fabric glue. There are many books and magazines that give tutorials on how to do this is in little time.

Consideration for fabric care is something not to be overlooked. Care for delicate or lightweight textiles may entail an extra step or two. Hand washing may be preferred over machine washing for longer wear but if one is unsure, consulting a dry cleaner may be the best bet. They may recommend their services but looking at it as an investment in something precious will make it seem less like an expense.

It can be kind of cool to have a fabric from another time to use how one sees fit and know that nothing like it will be found in a store. This type of trendsetting is catching on and allows people to use their creative powers instead of trying to keep up with others. It can also save time and money.
