What To Consider When Implementing Residential Landscaping Project

By William Parker

In the realms of property development, landscaping plays a critical role in determining the value of a property. To a homeowner, proper landscaping adds some functional and aesthetic appeal. The good thing is that there are several ways you can beautify your home. For instance, you can improve your backyard with a pool, outdoor kitchen, and fire feature among others. Similarly, you can improve the front yard with walkways or eco-friendly gardens. Essentially, undertaking a residential landscaping project should not be difficult if you follow the right rules. Here are the top design principles that will guide you in your projects.

The first one is the law of significant enclosure. This one is more of a law than a rule, so this is absolutely critical while implementing your gardens. Typically, gardens should be enclosed. That is, creating a sense of refuge. This design law stipulates that we should be able to feel enclosed when the horizontal space is not more than three time the vertical edge of a space.

Another principle similar to the above is the rectangular line. This line is supposed to guide you in placing different features in your project. From architectural and landscaping perspective, there is always an imaginary line that defined by the nearest feature such as a tree or a building edge. So, in order to achieve a cohesive design, you should place items respect to the imaginary line.

In addition to the above, the golden rectangular rule should help you to proportionately layout items within the project area. It is a rule that has been practiced for decades. It requires that the ratio of the long and short side should be proportionate. Specifically, the ratio of short to long side can be equated to the ratio of long side with regards to the sum of long and the short side is 1:1.6. So, as you lay out different features such as lawns, terraces, patios, and arbors take this rule into consideration.

As you do plan for your project, know that size matters. Always try to go big. For instance, if you have a choice of constructing a pool shorter or longer, a staircase narrower or wider, always go with the bigger one. It might seem excessive at the moment but several years down the line time will prove you right.

A very important part of landscaping is the plants. So it is important to make the best out of it. When you are planting always start with the biggest them move gradually to the next biggest up to the smallest. This is important is ensuring that you implement your project without major hiccups. For instance, if you were to prepare your bed first before planting trees, then you might end up damaging the beautifully laid bed when planting the big trees.

Another thing to consider when planting plants is how well you mix separate species. It is more powerful to plant in masses because it is much better to have several vegetations of the same species than having a variety of mix is a small area.

Finally, you have to put a lot of emphasis on ensuring that your plants are well planted. This is even more important than any of the above. Make sure that they are planted at the right height, and sufficiently sized.
