Choosing The Right Compost Spreader

By Mark Carter

If you are trying to enrich the soil, your best bet is to use natural fertilizer made from composting. Choosing the right compost spreader will help get the material in the right place regardless of the area you are treating. There are different sizes that can be used for everything from a single yard to a large field. It is important to pick the right tool for the job.

Two basic sizes exist. Sure, there are actually many different sizes, but the two basic ones are industrial application and lawn application. For the larger areas, the industrial size that is pulled behind or hooked up to a tractor works best. These would be overkill for anything under an acre. Figure out how much space you have to fertilize and choose the right equipment for the job.

Side composters are designed to pull behind a tractor. These are great for throwing a large amount of material in a wide spray as you drive along the field. These also work well with wet manure by breaking it up into smaller pieces. For foliage that is more delicate, these will be an excellent source. They're also better for material that is too wet for dry applicators and will clog tanks.

Box spreaders with a vertical bar are great for maximizing the amount of spray. The box is pulled behind a tractor and the fertilizer is broken up and sprayed in a way that lays a nice layer on top of the soil. This thicker layer provides more nutrient value to the soil as it is mixed in.

Horizontal bars are used to control the spray area. When using the box with horizontal bars hitched up behind the trailer the material can be controlled by keeping it within the track of the wheels. This allows a more accurate spread of the manure where the accuracy is needed. This helps by lengthening the distance on an application when working a field with long rows.

Spinner beaters allow you to control how much is applied much more accurately. When you want to use different types of compost together and have an even spread, the spinner beaters mix the material together to make this possible. The different density in materials is less important because of these beaters. Having more control allows you to spread the different materials at the same time instead of making multiple trips which may compact the soil.

Smaller jobs such as lawns require similar equipment but can be scaled down to pull behind riding mowers. For a manual application, you can choose a mess roller style. These are front-loaded, meaning you can open the door and easily load or unload directly into the roller. The mesh breaks up the materials and provides an even spread across your lawn.

To save time and money, it is important to choose the best equipment for the job. Larger field operations require different equipment depending on the application you are going to put down. For smaller areas and lawns, there are lots of options to choose from as well. Using natural fertilizer is cost effective and good for the environment.
