Tools Every Diyer Should Own

By Jim Thorpe

The time has finally come. You could sense it for months, maybe even years. The signs were barely noticeable at first. A shovel leaning precariously against the side of your garage. Your garden tools in a plastic bag by the door. Then, almost overnight, it seemed like you lost control completely. Bags of potting soil somehow tumbled over, dirtying the side of your car. Your lawnmower was edged sideways until you could no longer park your minivan in the garage. And finally you walk outside one morning to see that your garage (and the space provided by its exterior walls) is woefully inadequate to store the gardening tools and materials that you have amassed over the years. Weaker individuals will encourage you to simply "get rid of the stuff that you don't need". But they don't understand. This is your yard, and you need to be prepared for anything, whether it be trimming hedges or killing weeds. Thankfully, there is a way for you to clean out your garage and maintain a high gardening-readiness level: it's time to build a shed.

The most often cited reason for this DIY trend is that these projects can save you money. Although this is true, it is still a good idea to think carefully about each project and make sure that you can invest the best materials and your time into a project before running into it on the cheap. This means that you should consider the costs of equipment and supplies to ensure that you are getting the best deal for your money and time.

How to Start Make sure that logistical stuff is taken care of first. For instance, many townships require you to file building permits for sheds, regardless of size. This is because towns want to limit the number of sheds demolished or blown over due to violent weather, so don't dismiss the importance of a required inspection. After you make sure everything is properly filed and documented with the village, you can then proceed to shed construction.

Beyond the mental benefits of doing a Do It Yourself project, there are also many physical benefits. Being active in the creation of a project can give you something physical to do at the end of the day. This is especially important because unless you work for one of the many Utah Construction Companies, you most likely spend the majority of your life working at a desk. Though these jobs can be extremely fulfilling they are also problematic because they can leave you stressed and tense at the end of the day. And even beyond the physical benefits of DIYing, there are also benefits that cannot be measured that are related to the pride and joy that come from accomplishing something. Starting a project and seeing it through until the finish is a great way to build self confidence and self-esteem, not just a shelf.

Another essential tool for the home's toolbox is the screwdriver. Here again there are multiple types and sizes of screwdrivers available, and while it is nice to have a wide range of available options when it comes to sizes of drivers, a person can get by sufficiently for most jobs with a medium sized flat head and a medium sized Phillips head screwdriver. In addition to the claw hammer and the two screwdrivers, every in-home toolbox should be equipped with a pair of good pliers. Once again, among all of the options for pliers, the two that will be used the most include needle-nosed pliers and vise-grip or locking pliers and these two are all that are required for most tasks.

Instead of hiring a Utah construction company to help build your shed, try giving it a shot yourself. Good luck!
