The saying that goes what is old becomes new again definitely applies to apparel and home decor styles. Then again, going retro can bring a new look to any outfit or furnishing. Vintage textile fabric can give new meaning to repurposing clothes or other items.

Things made with trendy colors or patterns are often associated with a particular decade or moment in history. Although there are some designs that stand the test of time, people often identify with imagery that is not something out of the ordinary. There are some who do not care whether something is in style or not because they feel that a certain design reflects who they are inside.

Most fabrics, in general, are versatile and works magic with any clothing ensemble or living space. In some cases, fabric can be used to create a new look without sewing skills. Anyone with a creative eye can transform anything with fabric glue and a pair of ordinary scissors.

For instance, a couple feet of vintage fabric can be easily made into a scarf, a simple skirt or tank top that can be worn with a number of outfits. Small or leftover strips can be made into a headband, holder or flower pin that complements a jacket or button down shirt. Fabric pieces can also be made into beads for jewelry.

Pieces of vintage cloth are ideal for repurposing clothes or make them better. From covering holes to creating pockets to adding a colorful piece for more length or width. There are many online tutorials and books that show how retro fabric pieces may be used to bring new life to an old outfit. Some of these do not even require the use of a sewing machine.

Retro fabric pieces can also be used to repurpose old clothes. Appliques for tee shirts, denim, as well as other outfits with holes, tears or in need of lengthening may benefit from extra fabric that will give a different look. Those with tailoring or advanced sewing skills can use the extra fabric to make extra room in clothing that is too small.

There are many different ways that fabric can be used to accentuate any living space. Twisted pieces of fabric can be used to hold drapes, napkins and other pieces of fabric. It may also accentuate curtains, hardware or formed to make a piece of functional artwork.

Textiles with unique designs or hues may also be used for decorating walls or surfaces. Most craft books have details on how to reinforce fabrics so they can be used repeatedly. There are also home economic books and online tutorials that show how to care for vintage fabrics.

With the exception of cotton or blended materials, care is best left up to the professionals. For the best results, these fabrics should only be washed by hand or if a machine is used, the setting is for delicate only. By using care, these textiles can be admired for years to come.
