The first thing that an individual needs to do is look for a tunnel in ones yard or garden. Make sure to step on the tunnel in a couple spots to make sure the soil is level with the ground. The next morning, if the spots are no longer level, that means the tunnel is yet active and the rodent is yet on the loose.
When using the trap method, it would be good to make a hole that is wider than the diameter of the trap in a specific area. Choose an area that is 18 inches away from one of the dirt mounds would be ideal. Check and see if the tunnel is at least 9 inches under the surface. However, it would be even better to locate a tunnel that is deeper by using a stick to measure the ground below. If much of the soil collapses, most likely there is a deeper tunnel exists.
Now in order to set the trap, all that needs to be done is to build a mound of soil on top of the center of the hole. Set the trap on it and the mole will think that the tunnel is blocked. Once he starts digging, this sets off the trap. In order for the trap to succeed, set it where the trigger pan presses against the soil mound.
To make sure no light pokes through, sprinkle soil on top of the trap. All that is left to do is wait once the safety catch on the trap is released. Everyday, check and see if the critter was caught and if so, dispose of it quickly. However, if mole activity seems to be continuing, set the trap in a new location.
A gentler way would be simply to make a repellent to keep moles away. This can be made by mixing one half cup of Castor oil and one half cup of dish washing detergent. Combine this with a gallon of water. Keep it in a spray bottle for easy retrieval.
Examine the lawn and make sure to find tunnels and areas where the repellent can be sprayed. Moles will no longer want to stay in those areas, but will migrate to areas in which they feel more at home. The process does not have to be a long one. Getting rid of moles can happen quicker than one might expect.
