Facts About Sod Installation Process

By Ruth Cooper

Sod is basically grass. The only difference is that it is not grown on soil. The cultivation process is done by some specialized turf farmers in specialized farms. When it is ready, it is harvested using specialized farm equipment. It is usually cut precisely into standardized square or rectangular sizes. This are then rolled and transported to the target market in order to be sold. Sod installation can then be done afterwards.

Golf courses, lawns and sports stadiums are places where harvested sod is used. Home builders and landscapers usually use sods too, especially on residential projects. Soil erosion can be avoided by installing these products in a place. It is also useful in places damaged during sporting activities, which include sports field.

Installation of sods is the process of laying turf in a required area. The process of installing sods requires a lot of concentration, focus and time. But first one has to consider certain factors before buying or installing turf in a particular area. A person needs to determine how much turf they need to buy. They can achieve this by measuring the area where the turf is to be placed.

It is also very paramount to determine the type of grass. This can be done by testing the soil around the area. Doing that ensures that the soil matches with sods. One is also advised to take note of other issues that may hinder performance when turf is installed. The time to carry on this process is also a factor. This determines the time when to buy.

There are various steps taken before setting up the product. The first step is for one to prepare the soil. Turf has a shorter shelf life and therefore, the soil needs to be prepared earlier before it is installed. Removal of debris and weeds is one way of preparing the soil. Removal of the current lawn is also necessary. The purpose for this is to stop competition between the weeds and grass.

One needs to install the turf along the longest straight line. This could be driveways or sidewalks. Make sure the edges are pushed against each other but avoid stretching the turf in order to avoid gaps in between or even overlaps. The joints in each rows of the turf should be staggered. Trim the sod using a large and sharp knife or machete. Avoid using a blunt object at all times for it destroys the sod.

Immediately after installing the product, one has to water it. Wetting the soil helps the sod to bond well with it. This is to be done for a week consistently to keep the soil moist and maintain soft underfoot. But one should also be careful not to make it oozing wet.

After the setup, recurrent maintenance is vital. Application of fertilizer and trimming of the grass is expected. It is recommendable for an individual to control pests from the beginning. Newly installed turf can be injured if weeds are not controlled. The purpose for doing all these is to maintain healthy turf.
