Useful Information Regarding Pull Type Spreaders

By Walter Russell

Several distinct kinds of spreaders exist in the current market that can assist people in applying granular materials like salt, seed, and fertilizer on farms and lawns. These diverse types of spreaders include pull-behind, hand-held, and push spreaders. People who have huge pieces of land to cover may have pull-behind spreaders as their best option. However, those with small lawns should use hand-held models since they are normally small in size thus fit for small projects. This is what Pull type spreaders are all about.

The push spreader is not suited for large farms despite it being better than the hand-held spreader. This is because it is very cumbersome to push the spreader for a long time. This makes the pull-behind spreader the best option as it is usually fixed on tractors which pull them behind. Therefore, this kind of spreader is the most convenient to be used on large farms.

Pull-behind machines are classified into two major classes, that is, broadcast and drop spreaders. Tow behind broadcast models are usually built with a spinning fan mechanism that shoots the content of the hopper in a circular spray pattern as the equipment is pulled forward. The broadcast pattern ensures that the material is spread uniformly on the lawn. It can be used to apply ice-melt, seed, and fertilizer.

A drop spreader works by dropping the material on the ground from a hopper. This machine has a few benefits over its broadcast counterpart. First, drop style spreaders offer more precision in the application of material. Whereas broadcast models apply material over a large area, they can end up causing a lot of wastage. They do this by applying in areas that are not supposed to be applied with the material.

Broadcast models may apply the materials beyond the area the equipment is moving. This makes it inconvenient in cases where one has ponds or flower beds close to where the seed or fertilizer ought not to be applied. Drop style equipment should be employed in such cases since it only spreads materials in the place where the spreader moves.

One should carefully consider the material used to make a spreader before they purchase it. This is because the durability of the machine is greatly dependent on the material it is made from. The spreader that one buys should have the capability to withstand hash weather conditions and corrosive substances. Equipment with an enclosed gear box can be a good indication that the device will not be damaged by weather elements.

The spreader that one buys should have a hitch that is compatible with a mower, ATV or tractor to be used. Hitches usually vary across different manufacturers. Therefore, it is important for one to check its compatibility with the machine to be used. The controls of the spreader should also be easily accessible to the driver while on the tractor.

Even if a spreader is of the right material, the kind of care that one provides it with will determine how long it lasts. For instance, after applying material such as ice-melt, it is important to clean the whole device thoroughly. Some materials have a corrosive effect and can reduce the lifespan of the device significantly.
