Safely Renting Equipment

By Skylar Decker

When you need to get a job or project finished quickly, there's a vast variety of equipment large and small that can quickly deal with a specialized task. Since owning large, specialized machines is not practical, renting is usually the way to go. But safe operation should always be at the forefront of any project. Not knowing what you're doing, or using something in a way that it wasn't designed to be used can quickly become far more counterproductive than productive.

On any project or job, the basic safety equipment should always be accounted for. The necessities include reliable safety glasses, sufficiently thick gloves and boots and proper head protection. On job sites with multiple workers, a safety vest is often required as well.

Many job site accidents are avoidable. A large number of them stem from workers using equipment in improper ways, or not fully knowing how to use a certain machine. A piece of equipment should be applied ONLY for its intended purpose. Misuse can result in damage or injury. When using machine, keep things professional and responsible. Avoid the urge to use potentially dangerous machines to play jokes. And before attempting to use any kind of machinery, be sure that you are fully qualified and educated on its use.

People working on small-scale, DIY projects often choose to rent smaller tools like nail guns to speed things along. The tools are nifty objects that can save a lot of sweat on a lot of different jobs. The scale of simplicity of use vs. potential danger isn't clear cut. Misuse of any equipment is always a bad idea, and even the smaller ones can cause a lot of damage.

Getting overconfident in operating skills can be a danger as well. Workers who have a lot of experience with something have a tendency to get a bit careless. Never overestimate your abilities, and try not to get fatigued or sloppy while operating hazardous machinery. Put the safety of others and yourself at the front of every project, and be alert with a responsible demeanor, and you can help any task go as smoothly as possible.
